5 Mistakes to Avoid When You Start Collecting Luxury Watches

5 Mistakes to Avoid When You Start Collecting Luxury Watches

Collecting watches is a kind of passion for me, and I’ve been collecting and buying watches since the late 2000s. I had the good fortune to turn my love of watches into a career. In my collection, I have mostly luxury watches like Rolex, Audemars Piguet, Omega, Patek Philippe, and many more. I feel lucky enough because one of my friends has a watch shop that helps me avoid the mistakes that a casual watch collector can make and guides me about what to do and what not to do.

However, after the guidance of my friend, I made lots of mistakes, some of them novice ones. And even gaining that much experience, I still occasionally fall into these traps.

For that reason, I have decided to come up with 5 mistakes to avoid when you start collecting luxury watches, so you can avoid these things during your journey of collecting incredible timepieces.

1. Trusting Blindly on Specifications

Well, most of us blindly trust the specs of any watch. It is in our nature that a short specific description attracts us the most and we only go with the short description and convince ourselves to buy that product or not.

Before making any move, you should first completely enjoy a watch and make a picture in your mind of whether it will look good on your wrist or not. Moreover, luxury watches are those types of watches that you will not wear regularly, so don’t look for the specifications that this watch is 200m water-resistant or not.

First, you should find a watch that you love to wear, then determine whether the features suit your needs and lifestyle or not. What matters the most is whether you like the watch or not because a watch is a companion you’ll have for a very long time (possibly for the rest of your life). You’re not buying a laptop or dishwasher, where choosing based on specs is crucial.

2. Buying Multiple Watches for Your Collection in a Go

When you first start collecting watches, you are enthused and frequently moved by items that are being offered for sale. You won’t even have properly started and you have a watch box full of watches. That is the most common mistake that every watch collector performs. Having a box full of watches is perfectly acceptable, but the collecting process itself is crucial.

I made the same mistake when I started collecting luxury timepieces and found myself with a box full of timepieces of all different types. Now, I hardly wear one of them because I’m attracted to a new type of timepiece. Here, I’d advise you to proceed carefully with your purchases. Before anything else, decide whether you want to push your watch collection.

3. Buying a Watch Because Someone is wearing it

Before social media, the world of watch collecting showcased a little more variety. Being influenced by another person, a buddy who collects watches, or members of the watch community isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Just be sure to get a watch for personal reasons and not because someone else told you to wear that watch and for that reason, you are purchasing it.

Purchase the watch you prefer since you are the one who will wear it and appreciate it, whether that watch is a Rolex Daytona or one from a brand no one has ever heard of. You’ll be satisfied if you buy the watch for the proper reasons because there’s a world outside of social media.

4. Buy that Watch You Really Desire

Sometimes, the watch you desire to have in your luxury timepiece collection is out of stock. The seller will divert your attention from that watch and possibly convince you to buy another brand of watch that looks quite similar to your desired one. But don’t settle for anything, you have to wait as long as you can, and when the watch comes back in the shop, no one can stop you from buying your desired watch.

An alternative can be just as good or unique as Swiss made replica Rolex watches, but you should be careful to avoid experiencing buyer’s remorse. Make sure you do it well because you’re likely to spend a sizable sum of money on something you don’t actually need. However, your budget is the most important thing, which can divert your mind from buying anything else that you don’t want to add to your collection. So, if you don’t have enough savings, then wait for it and come again when you have sufficient savings.

5. Buying Pre-Owned or Vintage Watches on a Budget

Always aim to purchase timepieces in the best condition that your budget will allow. You’ll end up with a collection of timepieces that will require significant repair or restoration efforts and costs. If the vintage watch you buy needs some repairing, you should have sufficient money to do that after buying this pre-owned watch.

If the reseller says it has recently been serviced, be sure there is documentation to support that. Services might cost a lot of money. Be sure you are buying into something you are aware of beforehand.

Conclusion

For most people, collecting luxury watches is also their hobby, and they don’t bother to consider the type and quality of the watches they purchases. Their prime focus is to collect different watches as much as they can. So, you have to think very clearly about the watch you love to wear or the watch you just want to rot in your watch collecting box.

All the above-mentioned mistakes have been done by me, and now it’s your turn. You can share with us your experience of watch collecting mistakes in the comments section.
